Tax free weekend saves consumers some money
Barre Gazette
July 27, 2006
On Wednesday, July 19, 2006, a local paper published an editorial regarding the positive impact the sales-tax free weekend of Aug. 12-13th will have on the state of Massachusetts.
I am glad to hear the Legislature has finally agreed to provide us with a temporary tax relief for one weekend, but I believe it still does not make up for the other 363 days of the year that working families in Massachusetts are feeling squeezed by the burden of high taxation.
According to Wednesday’s editorial, the state will lose an estimated $15 million in taxes for the sales-tax holiday scheduled in August. Meaning, working families will save $15 million dollars of their hard earned pay check. I think the State Legislature should study the benefits of the additional commerce Massachusetts will attract with additional sales-tax free weekends. If Massachusetts can transform its reputation to become more consumer friendly, I believe this will have a positive impact on future tax revenue and economic job growth for the Commonwealth.
I have called on my opponent Anne Gobi and Speaker Sal DiMasi to join me in calling for the State Legislature to study the positive impacts of more sales-tax free weekends here in Massachusetts.
